The pilot of a small plane has died in a crash near a Chestnuthill Township airport on Sunday morning.
State police at Fern Ridge said the plane crashed at about 10 a.m. behind a home on McIlhenny Road near the Pegasus Air Park, located at Hickory Lane and Greenview Drive.
Fred Duckloe, another pilot based at the airport, witnessed the crash. He said he knew the pilot of the crashed plane, whom he said was experienced.
“I was washing my plane so I had a clear view of the crash," Duckloe said. "I saw the airplane over the northwest of the airport. It was coming down with an unusual attitude and it looked like part of the tail came off. A second or two later a wing came off."
Duckloe said the crash did not occur during the plane's takeoff or landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration will be handling the investigation. Fern Ridge Police assisted at the scene.
Police have not released the victim's identity. No further details are yet available.
